TC & N Taylor: New crop 2018 – Organic Onions.
Variety Highlander: Slightly flat, globe-shaped bulbs are lighter in color than most long day varieties, but the bulbs are very firm with thin necks. Since it is an extra-early maturing variety, it can be planted in all the intermediate day areas, as well as the long day areas. It will store up to five months. With its tight, thin neck it is easy to cure. Highlander is less susceptible to botrytis and downy mildew, the two most common diseases in onions.

“From one man and a wheelbarrow to an award-winning organic delivery company.” The Riverford box scheme began when Guy Watson started delivering vegetables locally to 30 friends in Devon. It now delivers around 47,000 boxes a week to homes around the UK. TC & N Taylor has been supplying Riverford with organic produce for a number of years. This coming season we have a supply contract agreement in place and we look forward to developing the relationship further over the coming years. www.riverford.co.uk
Read MoreThe challenges of 2017: Potato blight.
Late potato blight (Phytophthora infestans) proved to be a major issue for us last season – resulting in significant yield loss. Late blight is one of the biggest challenges facing potato growers in general, for organic growers it’s a massive problem. Blight pressure during the 2017 season was particularly high; in addition, almost all the UK outbreaks of the strain EU37 were in the West Midlands. This strain of blight is particularly virulent and out-competes all of the other strains. As an organic grower the only way of controlling potato blight is to use a product called Cuprokylt. During the 2017 season an emergency authorization was granted. However, this emergency authorization can only be made twice, so 2018 will be the last...

Organic growth during 2015/16 was 5%, on average. Growth for 2017 and 2018 is predicted to be nearer 10%. As a result TC & N Taylor put into conversation 200 hectares of ground in 2015/16; a further 200 hectares is planned for 2017/18. This will allow us to grow 200 hectares of potatoes and 200 hectares of carrots on a sustainable rotation to supply the market long term. European exports are becoming increasingly important in a balanced sales programme.
Read MoreBiological control of aphids.
Biological aphid control has been introduced onto the farm following successful trials in 2016. As part of a fully integrated pesticide policy beneficial insects have been encouraged for many years – by the planting of floristically enhanced margins, and last year a full release program of lacewings, parasitic wasps and ladybirds was carried out to predate on the Carrot Willow Aphid. The numbers were controlled so effectively that the plan has now been adopted into our intergrated management approach. 15,000 lacewings are introduced during April, along with 3000 parsitic wasps. Then in May 1,500 ladybirds are released so they can lay their eggs and the larvae will then feed ‘frantically’ on the aphids during late June....

As part of our drive to manage our soils well, combined with our increasing responsibility to our major customers to deliver in all weathers, we have undertaken a complete move to all harvesting being achieved through tracked, self-propelled machines. 2014 saw the delivery of a Grimme Varitron 220. The benefits of this have been so impressive, it has convinced us to move carrot operations the same way. 2016 saw the introduction of a self propelled Asa carrot harvester, which has revolutionised how harvest our crop in the winter months. 2016 also saw all heavy tillage and cultivation work being done with a Cat Challenger. These moves have furthermore improved the soil structure of our land base.
